Per figures provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained beginning in October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has stated that the true toll is probably substantially larger, as a result of many of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Investigation Outcomes

Although the aggregate figure of casualties documented being substantially larger than other recent estimates, it probably fails to capture the entire scope of losses among Palestinians, per the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.

“While we are offering documentation for a greater figure of casualties than earlier indicated, this is not a full picture,” he stated. “We are sure that there are even now people who lost their lives in confinement that we have not identified.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Restricted Israeli data suggests that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who died in detention were ordinary citizens, per a simultaneous inquiry.

In May of the current year, a military intelligence database monitoring all militants in Gaza, a registry of in excess of 47,000 identified persons, documented just 21 deaths in custody. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.

Prison Situation

Brutality, mistreatment, and additional maltreatment of detainees from Palestine has been normalised across Israel’s jail system over two years of hostilities. Systemic Abuse

The organized mistreatment was accompanied by a disturbing rise in fatalities recorded across a minimum of 12 detention centers in Israel. During the previous decade before the war, there were usually a couple casualties a year.

“This does not represent merely an isolated incident sporadically. It is institutional and it will continue,” a spokesperson said, partly because there is a culture of virtual exemption from consequences for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinian individuals.

Just one case of beating detainees has come to trial, with the soldier handed a punishment to 210 days. An attempt to charge additional individuals over a brutal attack involving assault caused public rallies and the detention of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the accused individuals now demanding that indictments against them are dropped.

No Legal Action

“Regardless of this mass number of casualties, during 24 months not a single person has faced arrest,” the representative noted. “There exist no charges over any killing.

“As long as these practices remain in effect, each Palestinian individual in custody is in danger, including the physically well individuals, even the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

High-Profile Cases

Several casualties in custody have been publicly known, such as a 50-year-old medical chief who lost his life in prison after a third of a year in custody.

An inmate incarcerated with the victim reported that he was taken to the yard by prison staff just prior to his passing, clearly wounded and exposed from the waist down. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Detention administrators and armed services gave researchers with the number of deaths in confinement, and minimal further data such as the facility where they died, but not the detainees’ identities.

Identification Challenges

In 21 cases, mainly people from Gaza, investigators were not able to match the minimal data supplied by government bodies to a death registered by rights organisations, either through statements from released detainees or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families may not know about their loved ones’ deaths as well, as Israel has made it difficult to monitor Palestinians it is confining. During 210 days at the beginning of the conflict, the armed services would not provide to provide fundamental details about the condition of thousands of people detained in Gaza, in effect enacting a practice of forced disappearance, per the advocacy organization.

Insufficient Disclosure
