Delhi Awakens to Toxic Smog Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" category.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of Delhi recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x exceeding healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected city leadership petitioned the supreme court to propose a modification of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that becomes contained over the city as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing ten thousand premature deaths annually in the capital.
